Brilliant, sharp, witty, hilarious. Andy Cheema represents all of these words and more. Over the last two years, Andy has served as the VP Operations and Finance of the Students’ Union, and has developed not only a deep respect amongst his peers. But “respect” doesn’t do him justice. Instead, Andy leaves many of his peers in awe, simply because few leaders come along as versatile and competent as the psychology student.
It’s funny how Andy got his start in student government. Several years ago, a friend – and current SU President, Colten Yamagishi – handed Andy a nomination package for the General Faculties Council. Andy ran and won, and the rest is history. During his two years on the SU executive, Andy’s intellectual precision has bettered the student experience in many ways. Working with local architects and the SU General Manager, Marc Dumouchel, Andy has spearheaded a renovation to the Students’ Union Building, which will dramatically enhance the quality of the student space. On top of this, he played an integral role in PAW Centre negotiations, while overseeing the annual $10 million SU budget.
When one first meets Andy, it is clear that he’s on a distinct level as a leader. However, the more one spends time with him, the harder (or perhaps easier!) it is to believe that a person can possess so many talents and yet never flaunt them. Andy, in my opinion, stands out amongst a group of brilliant students. He is a mover and shaker at the U of A, and is primed for more of the same upon graduation.
