Born Apart

by Nicholas Siennicki

They saw me conquer the world with a few innocent men

Holding onto their definitions of divinity

Praying on tombstones of father’s slain here

That this time, oh this time, all this was for real

But I sold all their souls

For a shot at glory

For a chance at the throne

They saw me conquer the world with a few hardened men

Bleeding their black blood o’er corpses of ideology

Slogging through morass and biting and blue hands

The cold in their eyes set flame to the field

So I traded their homes

To become a hero

With the grandeur of God

They saw me conquer the world with a few bloodstained men

Giving up lives freely for love of Country

True to the Third Republic and all her true dreams

Liberté, Egalité, et Fraternité

I compromised ideals

To bathe in my honour

Hope driven afore me

So they saw me conquer the world with a few innocent men

Once more they feel their heartbeats fade out in time

Breathing in mem’ry of all of their goals

This time, oh this time, all this was for real

I sold all their souls

And I got my glory

Though I lost my throne

Painting by Jacques-Louis David, 1805
