Edmonton Journal’s Staples Suggests That Mandel Will Hang Up His Cleats | The Wanderer Politics

In our 24-7, non-stop coverage media cycle, David Staples looks to be one of the first to write that Mandel is done. Last week, Mandel announced that a press conference will be held today, on Tuesday May 21. At this conference, Mandel is expected to announce that he will finish up as Mayor, days after completing much of the Edmonton arena deal. Diotte has already thrown himself into the fray, and it would not be surprising to see other city councillors, like Don Iveson and Karen Leibovici, do so as well.

If Mandel does step down, he will be a tough act to follow. A three-term mayor, Mandel contributed significantly to Edmonton’s cultural rejuvenation, one that now sees the Make Something Edmonton, do-it-yourself attitude gaining momentum. Whatever Mandel does, he could probably use a much-deserved break.
