Jaki Ellis: Superhuman

Originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Jaki has always surrounded herself with successful people and it is no surprise that we find her in the company of some of U of A’s most influential undergraduates of 2012. Frequently on the rosters of Team Ontario, Jaki has been a powerhouse in the sport of volleyball since a young age. She is now a fifth-year veteran player with the Pandas, bringing more than just national team experience to the lineup. Highly deserving of the accolades she receives in the volleyball word, Ellis is consistently an Academic All-Canadian, the recipient of the Randy Gregg Athletic Award from the Students’ Union, a CIS All-Canadian, a CIS Tournament All-Star, the Canada West Thérèse Quigley Student-Athlete Award and is the 2012 U of A Female Athlete of the Year. She also spent her senior year as a Panda breaking records in Canada West and CIS volleyball. If you were to ask her about this, she wouldn’t receive any of it without directing additional credit to her teammates and coaches.

She is also incredibly easy-going, is a fantastic baker and has an infectious smile.

I know her very well and still I have yet to determine if Jaki Ellis is actually human.

This fierce competitor is a natural born leader with an intangible quality that inspires those around her to be faster, stronger, smarter, kinder… she just makes people better! A characteristic she also brings to the court, somehow making a better set than she should have with what she was given.

Being an influential part of a growing student-athlete community at U of A, Ellis has taken Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics by storm and will have left the University Athletics Board miles better than she found it. Jaki has used her friendly, outgoing and non-judgmental personality to inspire other student-athletes to expand their boarders beyond their own team rosters. How she spreads herself so thin, and yet she and stays so strong and successful… I’ll never know. But I do know this Panda is going to make a huge impact in the future wherever she decides to put her heart.
