Karly Newbigging: bringing eco-fashion to campus

Karly Newbigging is in her final term of study in her Education degree. She is someone that truly lives the brand of life-long learning, community leadership and the pursuit of excellence. During her student career, she was the co-president of the Human Ecology Students Sssociation from 2010-2011. Moreover, she was the featured designer for a cancer benefit fashion show in Calgary in 2010, showing off her keen eye for quality. Later that year, she collaborated with fellow students and artists in Edmonton at a fashion show which fundraised for Edmonton Food Bank called He(art)beat. Since 2010 and throughout the 2012 year, Karly’s taken eco-fashion to a new level at the U of A, showing what it is that students can do with a bit of creativity!

Her teaching experience extends to her community by teaching first aid and CPR courses as well as several babysitting courses, tests of patience that have no doubt prepared her for her more substantive activities. Currently she is volunteering with Hillcrest Junior High school in the west end helping students get organized and productive in their studies through innovative strategies. Owning her own business on the side, Karly creates custom clothing designs; her most recent was making a lace graduation gown for a young girl with a severe form of autism. Karly is a selfless individual that has touched many well beyond the walls of university buildings. She is one to give back generously at any opportunity with style and grace.
