The 2012 Bears volleyball season opened as one of its best ever, with a 20-0 ranking and #1 ranking in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Matt McCreary, a 6’8 standout on the squad, turned in yet another strong season, combining this with a commitment to his peers reflected in the work of the University of Alberta Athletics Board. As one of the several VPs of the UAB, McCreary somehow finds ways to combine academic excellence with sporting prowess, all while maintaining a sense of humour and compassion toward others.
In 2012, McCreary was among the Canada West Conference leaders in hitting percentage, sitting fifth with a tally of .406. In addition to this, McCreary led the squad in blocks per set at 1.12, amassing 104 of them during the 2012 campaign. This high achievement on the court propelled the Bears to a CIS Nationals spot, where they would finish 2-1 following a narrow opening game loss to Laval.
Between the numerous fundraisers, meetings and social events hosted by the UAB, his work at the opening Bears-Pandas varsity orientation and his success on the volleyball court, McCreary had a stellar 2012 year.
