Mike McGinn: representing social justice

Mike McGinn currently serves as the co-head of the Student Umbrella for Social Justice (SUSJ) and is a Students’ Union councillor representing the Faculty of Arts. Mike made his debut in the U of A social justice scene by working for the Make Poverty History and interning for the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.

Mike brings passion to student politics. Last year, Mike ran a phenomenal campaign against Andy Cheema for the position of VP Operations and Finance. Although he was defeated by approximately 300 votes, Mike started a discussion about social justice issues within the Students’ Union. Subsequently, Mike ran for a seat in council and won. Over the summer, he worked tirelessly to establish the Social and Environmental Responsibility Committee in the Students’ Council, which would review issues regarding social justice and make recommendations for the executive committee.

Mike deserves to be in this list, as he has been working tirelessly in an area that he is extremely passionate about, while trying to make a bigger change through politics. He is a creative, innovative, and admirable individual, who has become the representative of the students who are passionate about social justice.
