Prior to Zach Fentiman’s year as Chief Returning Officer (CRO) of the Students’ Union, the annual elections were a mess, with two candidates needing to re-run following violations of elections rules in the previous year. Zach, a former two-time VP Operations and Finance of the SU and President during several months, assumed the role of CRO in 2012 and returned the elections to order.
Zach commands a respect from his peers that is palpable. An eloquent, measured speaker and reflective thinker, when Zach speaks the room goes quiet. This was true in the SU executive offices, though it was particularly evident to the public during the March 2012 executive elections, when Zach established himself as a firm CRO, setting rules and following through on all of his decisions. In a year that required a strong presence from the CRO, Zach restored the integrity of the process, a significant accomplishment with positive implications for years to come.
The success as CRO was simply one of Zach’s many accomplishments in an outstanding university career, one that has seen him make an impact in his Lister community, the SU and even as a Finance Honours student in the School of Business. An obvious candidate for the Top 100, Zach has earned every ounce of the profound admiration from his peers.
